I loved the main design of Dress SMBD12127, but because my son’s wedding was outdoors in July, I wanted different sleeves. The zip worked perfectly, the lining was substantial without feeling heavy, and the dress arrived clean with no unusual odour. It was lightweight enough for a July wedding, yet it never felt thin or cheaply made. It flowed beautifully, photographed amazingly, and was comfortable from the ceremony until the last dance. I do want to share one piece of advice for anyone ordering custom sizing because this mistake was completely mine. I shortened my hollow-to-hem measurement because I was worried the dress would be too long and I’d end up paying to have it hemmed anyway. Don’t do that. Enter your exact measurements. By shortening that measurement, I accidentally changed the proportions of the dress. Instead of simply making the dress shorter, it caused the point where the skirt begins to flare over the hips to sit too high on my body, making my torso appear shorter than it actually is. My dressmaker simply lowered that transition point so it matched my natural proportions. It was an easy alteration, but it was completely preventable had I just trusted the process and entered my true measurements. Ironically, the alteration I created for myself was much more involved than a simple hem would have been, so hopefully someone else can learn from my mistake. What impressed me just as much was my local dressmaker’s reaction to the dress. She regularly alters formal gowns ordered online from overseas and immediately commented on how well this one was constructed. She told me it was one of the best-made online dresses she’d worked on. She explained that the inside was professionally finished, allowing her to remove a seam, turn the dress inside out, and make the alteration without fighting poor construction. Hearing that from someone who works on gowns every day gave me even more confidence that I had made the right choice. For reference, I’m 5’6½” (169 cm) with approximately a size 16 bust and 18 hips, so custom sizing was the perfect option for me.
